UCLA Students Awarded Association Scholarships

The highlight of this year's conference for me was the SLA President-Elect's Poster Session and Awards Presentation for Students sponsored by SLA's Student and Academic Relations Committee (SARC). Held on June 11th, I was able to see two students of UCLA's Department of Information Studies be awarded their association scholarships from Hope Tillman, President-Elect of SLA. Jennifer Alcoset, recipient of the 2001 SLA Affirmative Action Scholarship, and Joe Purtell, recipient of a 2001 Scholarship for Graduate Study, were warmly applauded as both were present to accept their awards. In addition UCLA Post-MLIS student Laura Smart, winner of the 2001 Mary Adeline Connor Scholarship for Professional Development, was acknowledged although she was unable to attend the ceremony. Attending this presentation was significant to me as I am the Advisor to the UCLA Student Chapter of SLA. The presentation also allowed me the honor of accepting on behalf of our chapter the 2nd place award from SARC in the Outstanding Leadership category of its annual competition among SLA student groups. It was moving to see our students acknowledged for their achievements especially within an association that was barely represented in our department less than two years ago.
