Vol. 28 No.7, Summer 2001

Requiem for a jobline.

In its day it was considered high tech. You could phone a number and listen to a recorded listing of available local job openings in Special Libraries. About five years ago, two additional phone lines were added and the system went digital, so listeners didn’t have to wait for the beginning of the recording. It could be updated remotely.

Then came the internet and listservs. Pretty soon job listings were being posted directly to newsgroups and listservs. The listings became two and three pages long and referred to employment department websites for even more details. Soon the recordings on the jobline simply referred job seekers back to the websites or referred to full text listings on the SLA SCC webpage. A 12 minute message became too short to hold all the information.

Effective July 27, 2001, callers to the jobline will be directed to the SLA SCC website http://sla.org/chapter/csca/employ.htm where the full-text of listings will be downloadable.

New job listings should continue to be e-mailed to slasocaljobs@mail.com
