Vol. 28 No.7, Summer 2001 Welcome to the 2001-02 Chapter Year!Well, here it is - THE FUTURE. One and a half years ago, when I agreed to run for Chapter President - I never thought this day would come. It was WAY in the future, the next century actually. But that time has buzzed by. A brief recap of the 2000-2001 Chapter year would show a record of success and change. Debbie Hartzman steered the Chapter through the launch of the SLA/LA2 002 Committee, the shoals of By-Law revision (yes, they passed), the high adventure eBay auctioning (raised $500+) and the maiden web voyage of the Chapter Membership Directory. What a way to close out the 20th Century! Now for the 21st Century - the Start of a New Millennium! 2001-2002 marks the Chapter's 75th Anniversary, and we deserve lots of parties. We're planning great meetings (& fun), gearing-up for SLA LA2002 (fun), and Board preparation for the 2002-03 By-Laws implementation (OK, not so much fun). We start with some Programming Bang! On Sept. 19th Russ Parsons (LA Times Food Editor) will speak on "Dining as Entertainment" at Restaurant 561, which is run by Cordon Bleu students at the California School of Culinary Arts. There will also be a library tour for interested attendees. The announcement for this meeting is in this flyer, so sign up now. On October 29th, Susan Greening, Librarian at the Skirball Center, will host a tour and a program featuring the new Executive Director of SLA: Roberta Schaffer. This is Roberta's first visit to our city in her new capacity, and she wants to hear from us about how the Association can better serve its members. The Skirball Center is convenient (located near the Getty) and the facility is fantastic, so you won't want to miss this meeting! In June 2002, SLA comes to the LA Convention Center to help celebrate the Chapter's 75th Anniversary! 6000 of our closest friends, I know they'll bring great presents. Our SLA/LA2002 Local Arrangements Chairs, anchors Doris Helfer, Seymour Satin, Barbara Amago and Debbie Hartzman, have outdone themselves. The SLA/LA 2002 Booth in San Antonio was Absolutely Fabulous!!! Kudos to Teresa Bailey for the LA-centric decor, thanks to Rita Costello for staff herding (TX humor) and a salute to Seymour's MD for the sunblock. If you've ever wanted to give a party - this is it! Debbie Hartzman is your contact for offering a helping hand. This is a great way for all of us to get involved. While there is A Lot to do (dinner buddies, local tours, etc.), the Lot has been broken down into reasonable & manageable commitments. Long-time members - your experience is being called upon. New members - your freshness and enthusiasm are needed. Student members - what a way to meet the SoCal chapter. [BTW: I'm a fan of old Judy Garland/Mickey Rooney "Let's Put On A Show" movies] As the Chapter year progresses, the Executive Board and Advisory Council will be prepping for the 2002-03 By-Laws revisions. The Executive Board will change slightly and it affects Nominations and Elections. The Advisory Council will be shrinking slightly - appointments will be affected. Duties of all Board and Council members will be affected - Laurel Crump (2001-02 President-Elect) will be greatly affected. I'll keep you posted on this. Remember, check the Chapter website and sign-up for the chapter email list sla-csca@lists.sla.org to keep up with all the Happenings. I look forward to working with you all this year. Go Forth & Help Party!!!!!!! (I just love !!!!s) Kathleen E. Smith WINN MALIN |
