The 2000-2001 Annual Business Meeting Recap

The meeting was held at the U.S. Court of Appeals Law Library in Pasadena on May 17, 2001. Debbie Hartzman, 2000-2001 Southern California Chapter (SCC) president, called the meeting to order and welcomed attendees. She discussed the Chapter's accomplishments in the year-end report she made for the Association, which included the following: revised SCC bylaws; high attendance at the diverse programs and area meetings; strong fundraising; newsletter production outsourced; upcoming electronic SCC directory; redesign of the Chapter’s website; a virtual fundraising event for our scholarship; Sternheim Scholarship winner from Southern California; active UCLA Student Chapter; and the SLA 2002 Conference Local Arrangements Committee is working diligently to fulfill obligations.

Next, Debbie announced the Karen Sternheim Scholarship winner, Aura Lippincott, a master’s degree candidate from the UCLA Graduate School of Information Studies.

Debbie thanked Laurel Crump for heading the Awards Committee. Awards went to the following individuals: Loran Bures for leadership in revising the Chapter's bylaws; Ann Coppin for faithfully reporting on the California Library activities; David Cappoli for his continued work serving as UCLA Student Liaison; and Robert Powers for redesigning the Chapter website. The 2001 Billie Connor Award went to John Shea; it will be presented to him by Billie at LAPL’s Best Friends meeting.

Hope Tillman, the SLA 2001-2002 President, gave a short history of some of the SLA/SCC accomplishments and historical facts, one of which is that the SCC has had the largest number of members become the SLA President. She discussed the SLA Strategic Initiatives that include rebranding, revising the conference structure, growing the membership, simplification, and partnerships. She said the strategic process should never end and that we need to stay flexible. Kathleen Smith, incoming SCC president, ended the meeting offering appreciation to the vendors, the students in attendance, the Advisory Council, and the outgoing Executive Board.
