Vol. 28 No. 3 Nov/Dec 2000

Karen Sternheim Scholarship

You may be wondering how the Chapter is planning to raise funds for its annual scholarship. Rather than a direct mail appeal, we've decided on a different approach. This year's Karen Sternheim Scholarship fund-raiser will be held in cyberspace rather than at the Los Angeles Public Library.

It's the new millennium and in that spirit we're having an eBay auction (http://pages.ebay.com/charity/) in April (exact dates have not been determined).

As far as we can tell, this is the first time any SLA chapter has tried this, so it's our opportunity to either 1) make the SLA's "Hall of Fame for Fundraising Innovation" or 2) find out the hard way exactly why this has never been done. The choice is ours. No SLA event has had the international audience that this venture will have, so it would be great to make this maiden voyage a memorable one (think Apollo 11 rather than Titanic).

And how do we do that? Through total involvement by the chapter members. Not that you as an individual need to spend a lot of time on it, only that everyone be involved either as a donor, bidder, or volunteer. Chapter-wide commitment would not only offset the inherent handicap of having me (a non-shopper, non-maller, non-eBay user) as a chairperson. It would guarantee success.

So, the pitch is simple. Be involved, have fun...and make the 2001 Sternheim Scholarship fundraiser a great one.

One final note: Any items/services you wish to donate must have a corresponding Donor Form. Call or email me for one, or check the chapter website in the coming weeks.

Thanks very much.
